Early on a thought that goes through my head while reading books of the growth of the U.S. was finally backed up by the author.  American settlers were going into new lands regardless of laws, treaties or risks.  They then expect the U.S. Government to protect them, along with justify their actions.  It was nice to see the settlers not portrayed as clean and virtuous struggling individuals.  The book does not dwell on this and that struck a chord with me.
